When reading Attorney General opinions about library law, one of the early sentences often identifies the law(s) establishing the library or libraries under discussion.

Knowing the type of library you have will help you select the Kansas laws governing your library.

Below are the types of libraries defined by Kansas law and the laws establishing each type.

  • Topeka, Salina and Hutchinson libraries: 12-1215
    In the "Home page Subject Index," laws related to this type of library are under "City, county, and township libraries."

  • City libraries are maintained by one city of the first, second or third class. K.S.A. 12-1220
    In the "Home page Subject Index," laws related to this type of library are under "City, county, and township libraries."

  • Township libraries maintained by one city and the surrounding or adjacent township. K.S.A. 12-1220
    In the "Home page Subject Index," laws related to this type of library are under "City, county, and township libraries."

  • County libraries maintained by one county. K.S.A. 12-1220

  • Regional libraries "maintained by two or more counties, or two or more townships." K.S.A. 12-1231

  • Library district libraries maintained by "one or more cities of the third class ... [joined with] one or more townships or portions of one or more townships in one or more counties." K.S.A. 12-1236
